Costume designer crafts tense look for Mosley thriller
Costume designer Lynn Ollie transformed characters in The Man in My Basement by using wardrobe to reflect their psychological journeys through the 1990s-set thriller. The film adaptation of Walter Mosley’s novel required period-accurate clothing that grounded the story’s surreal elements in visual reality.
Ollie dressed protagonist Charles in grunge layers and muted tones, such as mustard and olive, to convey his initial disarray. His wardrobe evolved as the character regained stability, eventually incorporating his father’s vintage suits. Willem Dafoe’s character Anniston wore solid, rich colors without patterns to contrast Charles’ aesthetic and suggest rootlessness.
Director Nadia Latif collaborated closely with Ollie on color choices that would complement the basement setting’s shadows and dark corners. The designer sourced costumes from multiple locations and fabricated specific pieces in Wales.
