Day-NRLM cash flood rewrites rural India
India’s Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihood Mission stands as a major government effort to reduce poverty and support women in rural areas. The Ministry of Rural Development runs the program to help poor households find self-employment and skilled work opportunities. The initiative brings rural families together into Self Help Groups and provides ongoing assistance for economic activities until their incomes rise substantially.
Since the program began in 2016, officials report that 10.05 crore rural households have joined 90.9 lakh Self Help Groups nationwide. The mission has aided 4.6 crore female farmers and backed 3.74 lakh businesses through entrepreneurship programs. Women’s Self Help Groups have secured Rs 11 lakh crore in loans from 2013-14 to the present.
The government originally launched the National Rural Livelihood Mission in 2010 and renamed it in 2016. Central and state governments share funding for this scheme, which ranks among the world’s largest poverty reduction efforts. The program also addresses domestic violence, education, nutrition, sanitation, and health issues affecting women.
