IHS cuts diesel by millions as towers go green
A telecommunications infrastructure operator cut fuel usage by nearly 50 million liters while equipping more than 6,000 towers with renewable power systems and linking almost 4,000 installations to electrical grids. IHS Nigeria outlined these achievements during a sustainability forum in Lagos, where representatives discussed collaborative strategies for meeting environmental targets through responsible network operations.
Gimba Mohammed from the company’s government relations division said the organization planted 4,000 trees across eight states and installed solar-powered street illumination in underserved areas. The firm partnered with Green Hope Africa to launch an education program training students as climate advocates. Electronic waste initiatives reached 214 participants through workshops that supported establishing 69 collection facilities in six states, plus the capital territory. Engineering Director Ghaith Al Hasan noted that proper partnerships and maintenance protocols enabled the operator to run renewable systems at more than 10,000 locations nationwide.
Grace Majekodunmi from the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency emphasized producer accountability across product lifecycles, while Aisha Raheem-Bolarinwa from Farmz2U addressed distribution challenges facing agricultural producers. Investment specialist Adaobi Nnorukah stressed early equity partner involvement for securing climate project financing.
