DHS sparks outrage using Halo, LOTR for politics
The Department of Homeland Security plans to continue using video games and fantasy franchises for political messaging after posting images that combined Halo and The Lord of the Rings with immigration enforcement themes. A spokesperson confirmed the agency will use Halo, Pokémon, The Lord of the Rings and other media to communicate its priorities.
The statement came after journalist Alyssa Mercante requested comment about posts featuring Halo imagery. Microsoft and Amazon have not addressed whether they authorized the use of their intellectual property. Individual creators from the Halo franchise expressed opposition, with Marcus Lehto saying the appropriation made him feel ill. Jaime Griesemer acknowledged that cultural icons naturally attract political attention but rejected comparisons between fictional alien parasites and human populations.
The controversy began when GameStop published commentary about console exclusivity ending, prompting the White House to share an artificial intelligence picture showing President Trump wearing Spartan armor. Homeland Security then posted multiple times using similar visual references from both franchises to promote enforcement policies.
