EU drags UMG Downtown deal to 2026
The European Commission resumed its investigation into Universal Music Group’s planned purchase of Downtown Music Holdings after a temporary suspension in September. Regulators extended their decision deadline to February 6, 2026, while examining whether the $775 million transaction threatens competition in European music distribution markets. Officials expressed preliminary concerns that Universal could access sensitive business information from competing record companies through the deal.
Independent music organizations opposed the acquisition, arguing it would harm smaller labels by reducing their revenues and limiting diverse releases across Europe. More than 200 industry professionals signed letters urging regulators to block the transaction. Universal representatives said they remained confident authorities would approve the merger and recognize its advantages for artists and independent musicians throughout the region.
