Pythagoras hoards hits and crimson dreams
Amsterdam investment firm Pythagos Music Fund purchased catalogs from songwriter Joe Janiak and the late lyricist Peter Sinfield in separate transactions. The company did not reveal financial details for either acquisition. Janiak contributed to recordings by Ellie Goulding, Britney Spears, and Lewis Capaldi, which generated billions of streams and earned platinum certifications worldwide.
Sinfield wrote lyrics for the progressive rock band King Crimson before transitioning to mainstream compositions, including Think Twice, which became a worldwide chart hit for Celine Dion. Chief executive Hein van der Ree stated that both catalogs aligned with the fund’s strategy of securing commercially successful rights. The firm launched in 2021 with $113 million in commitments from private and institutional backers to acquire European music copyrights.
