Farmers in Lower Benue urged to adopt irrigation
The Lower Benue River Basin Development Authority has encouraged farmers and agribusiness owners across four states to adopt irrigation practices for continuous crop production. Managing Director Terese Ninga addressed participants at a three-day training program that concluded on Thursday in Makurdi, during which 60 farmers from Plateau, Benue, Kogi, and Nasarawa states received instruction and financial grants.
Ninga stated the initiative aligns with federal efforts to combat poverty and establish reliable food supplies throughout the year. The program targets dry season agriculture, a period when many Middle Belt farmers traditionally remain idle despite available water resources.
Abeam Global Resources, a partnership organization, representative Kola Balogun said the training addressed key challenges facing regional farmers. Participants praised the sessions, particularly modules covering financial planning and inventory management.
Beneficiaries pledged to implement techniques learned and use allocated funds responsibly. The authority emphasized that sustained agricultural output remains essential for the region, considered a major food production area.
