France, Nigeria tech pact heats up at Lagos forum
France promised deeper technology cooperation with Nigeria at a creative industries gathering on Saturday in Lagos. Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said both nations will develop digital tools and regulations that protect citizens without limiting innovation. He noted the bilateral relationship has grown stronger through frequent leadership exchanges between Paris and Abuja.
The CréationAfrica forum drew 1,000 participants from 42 countries, with 80 creators from Nigeria. Barrot said France leads European cultural industries while Nigeria dominates African markets. The minister highlighted joint infrastructure projects like the Omi Eko water transport system, which will add 75 electric boats and 15 routes across Lagos.
France supports the 410 million euro waterway initiative with European Union partners to cut travel times and carbon emissions. Barrot opened an exhibition honoring musician Fela Kuti and visited a renovated French school serving local and expatriate families. He said collaboration spans culture, economy, and infrastructure between the two countries.
