GM halts EV van production in Ingersoll, Ontario
General Motors will stop making electric delivery vans at its Canadian factory as demand falls short of projections and American policy shifts hurt sales. The automaker produces zero-emission vehicles at the Ingersoll plant west of Toronto for clients such as FedEx, but says interest grew far more slowly than anticipated. President Donald Trump eliminated tax credits worth up to $7,500 for electric car buyers and forced manufacturers to reconsider strategies developed under his predecessor, Joe Biden. The move affects more than 1,000 workers at the facility.
Union leader Lana Payne criticized the decision after Ottawa spent billions supporting electric vehicle development. Canada aimed to become a major producer by leveraging mineral deposits needed for batteries and creating complete manufacturing chains from extraction through assembly. Eight Ontario electric vehicle plants received 43.6 billion Canadian dollars in government assistance, but five already paused or delayed operations as consumer appetite weakened. Automakers had invested heavily in electric capacity before Trump reversed federal support for the technology.
