ICJ rules Israel must allow aid into Gaza
The United Nations’ top court has ordered Israel to permit humanitarian assistance into Gaza and uphold its duties as an occupying authority. The International Court of Justice issued its detailed advisory opinion on Monday after the UN General Assembly requested guidance about the occupied Palestinian territories.
Israel must guarantee that Palestinians receive basic necessities such as food, water, medical care and shelter, judges ruled. The court also directed Israel to safeguard aid workers and medical staff operating in the region.
By a 10-to-1 vote, the tribunal determined Israel must work cooperatively with UN agencies, particularly UNRWA, the Palestinian refugee relief organization. UNRWA responded by demanding that Israel rescind policies that prevent Israeli officials from coordinating with its staff, saying these restrictions endanger humanitarian operations.
The agency reported that its personnel have faced killings, detention and mistreatment while its facilities have been attacked or seized. UNRWA called for immediate accountability and the removal of all operational barriers blocking aid delivery.
