India pledges strong UN support, calls for reform
India plans to maintain active cooperation with the United Nations to support peace efforts, sustainable development goals and representation for developing nations, Union Minister Manohar Lal stated on Saturday. Speaking at the 80th UN Day celebration in New Delhi, he praised the organization’s eight-decade record of conflict prevention, international law promotion and assistance to struggling countries.
Lal referenced India’s G20 theme of shared planetary responsibility, stressing how nations must work together on connected problems. He pointed to the India-UN Development Partnership Fund and capacity-building programs as proof of his country’s practical commitment to helping the developing world.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar offered sharper criticism earlier, arguing the UN fails to adequately address global concerns. He noted how a Security Council member shielded the terrorist organization behind the April 22 Pahalgam assault.
Jaishankar acknowledged that UN processes have grown divisive and ineffective. He called for the expansion of the Security Council to better reflect member states’ priorities.
