UJALA scheme marks decade of energy savings
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal credited advertising executive Piyush Pandey with helping transform the UJALA energy efficiency program into a nationwide success through compelling public messaging. The government launched the Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All initiative 10 years ago on January 5, 2015, to reduce power consumption by distributing affordable LED lighting to Indian households. Pandey created promotional videos that resonated with citizens and raised awareness about conservation benefits.
The scheme has delivered 368.7 million LED bulbs as of January 6, 2025, making it the largest zero-subsidy lighting program globally. Energy Efficiency Services Limited and distribution companies implemented the effort under the Ministry of Power to provide bulbs, tube lights, and fans at accessible prices. The initiative has lowered electricity costs for millions of families while substantially cutting carbon emissions. Prime Minister Narendra Modi assigned Goyal to oversee the rollout a decade ago.
