India’s AI rulebook lands as tech watchdog wakes up
India released new artificial intelligence governance standards on Wednesday that establish ethical boundaries for deploying the technology responsibly across different industries. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology described the framework as a significant step before the India-AI Impact Summit 2026, positioning the nation as a leader in accountable AI regulation.
The document presents seven ethical standards, guidance spanning six governance areas, implementation timelines divided into immediate and future phases, and practical direction for companies, programmers, and oversight bodies to maintain transparent AI systems. Secretary S. Krishnan noted the approach centers on human welfare while leveraging current laws where feasible. Principal Scientific Adviser Ajay Kumar Sood stressed that India’s strategy follows a Do No Harm philosophy, blending experimental testing environments with safeguards inside an adaptable regulatory structure.
Additional Secretary Abhishek Singh said officials completed the draft after broad public input and thorough examination. The government wants AI to remain accessible and affordable while building a trustworthy environment that encourages innovation. IndiaAI, operating under the ministry, manages the mission focused on spreading AI advantages, strengthening national capabilities, advancing technological independence, and guaranteeing ethical use.
