Tinubu says Africa needs deeper trade integration
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu warned that Africa cannot reach industrial capacity or compete globally while operating through disconnected markets separated by inefficient borders. Speaking through Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Customs Partnership for African Cooperation in Trade conference in Abuja, Tinubu argued that seamless integration and modernized administrative systems remain essential for unlocking continental prosperity. He described Nigeria’s economic reforms, including foreign exchange market unification, port modernization, and digital clearance systems, as creating foundations for stronger commerce across the region.
The president highlighted measurable progress, noting non-oil exports to African markets increased 38 percent while cargo clearance times dropped roughly 30 percent. Nigeria plans to launch its National Single Window platform in phases, with initial operations beginning in March 2026 and full implementation by December 2026, reducing clearance times from three weeks to under seven days.
Finance Minister Wale Edun and Industry Minister Jumoke Oduwole endorsed accelerated regional integration, while World Customs Organization Secretary-General Ian Saunders and Afreximbank Executive Vice President Kanayo Awani pledged support for modernization efforts.
