Uganda Waragi marks 60 years with nationwide celebrations
The distillery behind a popular Ugandan gin marked six decades of operations by honoring motorcycle taxi drivers and other workers who keep the nation moving.
Uganda Breweries Limited selected boda boda operators as the centerpiece of anniversary events for Uganda Waragi, which first appeared in 1965 when two dozen blenders created a recipe drawing from traditional distilling methods. Marketing Manager Hilda Aguti explained that these riders represent the same determination and connection to communities that the brand has reflected across generations. The company distributed branded items to taxi workers and motorcycle drivers while visiting food sellers at Nakawa Market and salon employees in Wandegeya. Entertainment figure VJ Jingo participated in festivities held at various city locations.
The gin uses water from Lake Victoria combined with botanical ingredients in a formula that has collected more than two dozen gold medals at international competitions. Brand Manager Hillary Baguma described the milestone as recognition for consumers who have embraced the product throughout its history. The SO UG SO 60 campaign will continue with additional events throughout the year, according to company representatives who emphasized the spirit’s role in Ugandan culture and its connection to local entrepreneurship and artistic traditions.
