Innovation, local brands get push from Made in Uganda drive
Government officials are promoting a dual approach to innovation that involves both creating entirely new concepts and enhancing established products, according to Abraham Muwanguzi from the Policy and Planning team.
During a Wednesday television appearance examining how science and technology can reshape the economy, Muwanguzi explained that breakthrough thinking led to inventions like telephones when someone envisioned easier communication methods. Refinement of existing technology then produced smartphones from basic button devices. The Supermarket of Made in Uganda program represents a major government effort to help small-scale creators reach customers and display their work alongside established competitors. Launched in 2023 at the Science and Technology Exhibition, the initiative has expanded to venues like the Uganda Manufacturers Association Trade Fair. Officials provide market research, branding education and business knowledge to participating entrepreneurs who often struggle with visibility despite producing quality goods.
Financial support comes through an Innovation Fund and a recently created SACCO for Innovators that distributes both grants and loans based on business management capabilities and development stage. As the cooperative grows, more participants will gain access to capital, Muwanguzi said. The program addresses challenges facing creators who begin operations at modest scales and lack the recognition needed to compete effectively in commercial spaces.
