US disaster losses hit $101B in first half 2025
America recorded 101.4 billion dollars in weather damage through June after 14 separate billion dollar events killed 174 people. Climate Central tracks disasters that cost at least 1 billion dollars and found that 2025 losses exceeded typical patterns from earlier decades. The nation has suffered 417 major weather events since 1980, causing 3.1 trillion dollars in damage and 17,092 deaths, adjusted for inflation.
Insurers face higher claim volumes as people build homes in flood zones and wildfire areas without strong construction codes. The research group uses Federal Emergency Management Agency records and industry data but excludes health expenses and supply chain problems from its estimates. Several storms in the Southeast and Texas remain under review and could push annual totals even higher when assessments finish.
