Kevin O’Leary says film extras should be replaced by AI
Kevin O’Leary suggested Josh Safdie should have replaced human background actors with artificial intelligence in the A24 film Marty Supreme. The Shark Tank investor made his feature debut in the movie, but criticized the production costs of hiring 150 extras per scene. O’Leary stated that directors could save millions by using AI-generated people in the background rather than real performers.
The businessman cited Tilly Norwood, a computer-generated actress concept introduced in September, as an example of potential cost savings. He claimed the $70 million production could have been made for $35 million using digital actors. O’Leary argued that studios could produce more films by cutting expenses through artificial intelligence.
Directors and artists question whether digital replacements can match the authenticity that real people bring to period films. Industry debates continue over balancing budget concerns against artistic quality. A24 built its reputation on human-centered storytelling and distinctive creative voices in cinema.
