Kitagwenda women thrive under Emyooga program
Women entrepreneurs in Kitagwenda District have built successful businesses through the government Emyooga cooperative program by producing wine, raising chickens, and processing coffee. Ritah Alinaitwe used cooperative funds to start wine production and construct a permanent home after years of financial struggle. Gertrude Kemigisha borrowed 400,000 shillings to process coffee beans into finished drinks that support her three children.
Members said equipment shortages and long processing distances reduce profits and limit growth. Fred Musinguzi, the district commercial officer, said officials recognize the program has helped residents, but additional funding is still needed for machinery purchases and business expansion. The cooperative serves women across Kitagwenda County who convert agricultural products into market goods. Participants said small initial investments grew into businesses that sustain households and change community economic conditions.
