Konami killed Kojima’s Matrix dream
Hideo Kojima nearly developed a video game based on The Matrix after the Wachowski siblings approached him in 1999. Christopher Bergstresser, a former Konami executive, told Time Extension that the filmmakers met with Kojima on August 25, 1999, and asked him to develop a game for their franchise. Konami chief executive Kazumi Kitaue rejected the proposal despite the directors’ enthusiasm for the designer’s previous work on Metal Gear and other titles.
A second former Konami employee said Kojima continued pursuing the partnership after the initial refusal. The Matrix series has received only a few video game adaptations since the first film premiered in theaters 26 years ago. Enter the Matrix arrived in 2003 as an action-adventure game, followed by The Matrix Online two years later as a multiplayer online experience.
