Lagos kicks off Design Week to boost creative industry
Lagos officials opened Design Week on Wednesday to showcase African creativity and position the state as a global hub for art and commerce. The six-day festival runs through October 28 with exhibitions and installations across 20 local government areas that promote Nigerian architects and product designers.
Commissioner Toke Benson-Awoyinka said the event celebrates young professionals building industries through innovation. Founder Titi Ogufere expects 20,000 visitors and 100 brand activations at locations in Victoria Island, Ikoyi, Lekki and Yaba under the theme Made in Africa.
The program features maritime design competitions and panel discussions with international architects about urban development. Netflix documentary Made by Design emerged from previous editions that connected local talent with overseas markets since 2019.
Federal tourism officials and state agencies support the festival that generates 250 million media impressions. Wole Soyinka Centre chief Tola Akerele praised organizers for sustaining a platform where designers demonstrate their abilities with diverse materials and techniques.
