Govt backs aviation growth at Fastjet’s 10th
Zimbabwe plans to expand aviation infrastructure and partnerships to boost economic growth, Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona said on Thursday at Fastjet Zimbabwe’s 10th anniversary celebration in Harare. The government views aviation as vital for economic development, trade and tourism.
Major airports received substantial investment in recent years. Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport, Victoria Falls International Airport and Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport underwent expansions and modernization. Policy reforms complemented infrastructure improvements through the Civil Aviation Amendment Act of 2018, which separated regulatory and operational functions.
Fastjet Zimbabwe began operations in October 2015 and serves three domestic cities plus four regional destinations. The airline operates Embraer ERJ-125 regional jets and contributed to passenger growth. Minister Mhona urged Fastjet and Air Zimbabwe to collaborate and add routes to Masvingo, Kariba and Buffalo Range after Grand Reef Airport refurbishment.
President Mnangagwa identified aviation as essential to achieving Vision 2030, which aims to attain upper-middle-income status. Global rankings named Zimbabwe a leading tourist destination for 2025. The government continues efforts to restore Air Zimbabwe as the national carrier.
