Morrisons to shutter 103 UK outlets in 2025
Morrisons will shut 103 locations across Britain this year as part of a restructuring plan to cut costs and focus on profitable operations. The supermarket chain announced closures of 50 cafes, 18 Market Kitchen restaurants, 17 convenience shops, 13 flower outlets and four pharmacies. Chief executive Rami Baitieh said the company faces higher expenses from energy bills, wages, and recent government tax changes. The retailer also plans to eliminate 35 meat service counters and 35 fish counters at various stores.
The closures affect branches in major cities such as London, Leeds, Glasgow, and Birmingham, along with smaller towns throughout the country. Morrisons earned 2.1 billion pounds in pretax profit for the year ending in October 2024 after previous losses of 919 million pounds and 1.3 billion pounds. Baitieh stated that customers struggle with tight budgets while the business manages inflation pressures and new regulations. The company will redirect savings toward competitive pricing, customer reward programs and facility upgrades.
