Museveni admits arrest of Kenyan activists Njagi, Oyoo
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni confirmed for the first time that two Kenyan activists missing for five weeks had been detained by his government. Bob Njagi and Nicholas Oyoo disappeared last month after masked uniformed men forced them into a vehicle following a political event where they supported opposition leader Bobi Wine. Museveni described the pair as experts in riots who were placed in the fridge for some days, speaking during a televised interview on Saturday evening.
The activists returned to Kenya on Saturday after diplomatic efforts by Kenyan Foreign Minister Musalia Mudavadi secured their release. Njagi stated the 38-day ordeal involved military abduction and left them uncertain about survival. Museveni acknowledged releasing them after receiving calls from Kenyan leaders, but warned that those attempting to incite unrest in Uganda would face consequences.
The incident reflects a broader pattern of cross-border detentions targeting opposition figures across East Africa, raising concerns about regional government cooperation to suppress dissent. Bobi Wine, running against Museveni in the upcoming elections, questioned why the activists were not formally charged if they committed offenses.
