Namibia’s financial watchdog sees surge in smart money moves
A financial regulator in Namibia reports that its October consumer protection initiative has successfully improved how citizens manage their money and understand their financial rights.
Junias Erasmus, who leads consumer education at the Namibia Financial Institutions Supervisory Authority, said the monthlong effort centered on the message Know Your Rights, Secure Your Future. The authority witnessed concrete changes during visits across the country, with people examining contracts more carefully before signing documents, confirming that businesses operate legally, and refusing to share personal banking information such as ATM cards or PIN numbers with others. These behaviors demonstrate that educational messages are influencing everyday financial decisions, Erasmus noted.
The authority targeted particular groups during the campaign, meeting with members of the Namibian Defence Force to discuss problems related to informal loans and excessive interest rates. Sessions with military personnel created opportunities to address topics like managing debt, borrowing wisely, and protecting against scams, Erasmus added.
