NES marks 40 years with bold climate vision
The Nigerian Environmental Society marked four decades of operation by announcing plans to strengthen environmental standards and climate policies across the country. The organization held its 35th annual meeting on Wednesday in Abuja as part of its anniversary celebrations.
Sarah Mukherjee from the Institute of Sustainability and Environmental Professionals addressed participants through video link. She praised the society for influencing major regulations such as the National Policy on the Environment and the Environmental Impact Assessment Act.
Society President Efegbidiki Okobia said the group began with 10 oil and gas professionals and has since expanded to 35 Nigerian chapters, plus one in Britain. He cited the May 2023 passage of the Institute of Environmental Practitioners of Nigeria Act as a significant achievement that established formal recognition for environmental work.
Mukherjee referenced Copenhagen flood management projects as examples of practical solutions that could address waste handling, pollution and energy challenges facing multiple nations. Members have participated in government committees and represented Nigeria at international environmental discussions throughout the organization’s history.
