Niger Delta group demands $100b from IOCs
A farmers and fishermen association from the Niger Delta wants international oil companies to compensate communities with $100 billion for environmental destruction. The Niger Delta Farmers, Fishermen, and Seafood Dealers Association cited oil spills, gas flaring, and acid rain as threats to regional livelihoods. National President Imoh Okoko and Secretary Sunny Eleas said heavy maritime equipment has destroyed fishing gear, while accidents at sea from 2019 to 2024 killed workers without compensation.
The group asked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and lawmakers to establish payments addressing 65 years of ecological harm. Leaders proposed depositing funds in accounts managed by oil-producing states working with environmental organizations. The money would support health infrastructure, education programs, and agricultural revival. Association members said the compensation would reduce regional tensions and restore decimated fish populations and plant species.
