Nigeria Customs launches digital vehicle verification system
The Nigeria Customs Service introduced a digital system on Tuesday that allows citizens to check import taxes and vehicle clearance records online. The platform eliminates document fraud and removes intermediaries who previously controlled access to customs information.
Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi said the homegrown software replaces manual processes that enabled forgery and resulted in revenue losses for decades. Users pay 15,000 naira to verify any vehicle identification number through the portal using debit or credit cards from anywhere in the world.
The Customs Verification Management System provides a centralized database that authenticates records within minutes. Officers receive analytics tools to identify suspicious transactions and strengthen enforcement operations across all commands.
Afripoint Consult developed the technology following a two-month trial period to test reliability before the official launch in Abuja. The service supports President Bola Tinubu’s digital economy goals while reducing disputes between importers and government agencies.
