NIMASA trains 22 nations in Lagos on ship safety
Nigeria’s Maritime Administration and Safety Agency has reinforced the importance of Port State Control as a critical tool for promoting maritime safety worldwide while eliminating vessels that fail to meet acceptable standards and protecting marine environments. Director-General Dayo Mobereola addressed participants at a regional training workshop in Lagos organized for Abuja Memorandum of Understanding member states with backing from the International Maritime Organisation. He stressed that PSC effectiveness depends on well-trained personnel who can maintain high professional standards during inspections.
The five-day program gathered representatives from 22 West and Central African nations to strengthen inspection capabilities and align procedures with international maritime conventions. International Maritime Organisation representative Captain Ahmed Sewelam emphasized regional cooperation as essential for eliminating substandard shipping operations and ensuring consistent enforcement across participating countries.
Abuja MoU Secretary-General Captain Sunday Umoren highlighted capacity development as a core objective, noting that strong flag state oversight directly enhances port state inspection quality. The workshop advances Nigeria’s broader strategy to bolster maritime security and environmental safeguards while reinforcing its regional leadership position.
