Xbox slump deepens as sales tumble
Microsoft reported a 2 percent decline in Xbox gaming revenue for the first quarter of fiscal year 2026, a drop of 113 million dollars compared with the same period last year. The decrease stems from a 29 percent decline in hardware sales, partially offset by a 1 percent rise in content and services revenue, which reached $ 5.5 billion.
The growth in content and services stemmed from increased Xbox Game Pass subscriptions and third-party game sales, although this gain was tempered by lower sales of first-party titles. Hardware revenue has now declined for two consecutive quarters, following a 22% drop in the prior quarter. Analysts attribute the trend to the aging console cycle, higher prices, and Microsoft’s shift toward multiplatform releases, including bringing major franchises like Halo to PlayStation 5.
The company has not disclosed pricing or release details for its next-generation Xbox, though reports suggest it will blend high-end PC and console features. Its market impact may depend heavily on cost, as it is expected to carry a significantly higher price than the upcoming PlayStation 6.
