Oyetola hails dockworkers at Lagos event
Nigeria’s Marine and Blue Economy Minister Adegboyega Oyetola has praised dockworkers for their essential role in advancing the country’s maritime sector while promising federal support to enhance workplace safety and employee welfare at ports nationwide. Speaking through Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency Director-General Dayo Mobereola at a Lagos celebration organized by NIMASA alongside the Nigerian Ports Authority and Nigerian Shippers’ Council, Oyetola characterized dockworkers as foundational to the industry who enable trade and economic expansion.
The federal government, through NIMASA, has launched initiatives including the distribution of modern protective gear for dockworkers and riverine transport operators, upgraded safety instruction programs, and strengthened emergency response systems. Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria President General Francis Bunu thanked the ministry and partner agencies for their ongoing dedication to worker welfare.
Labour and Employment Ministry representative Emmanuel Igbinosun called on stakeholders to maintain secure working environments and provide fair compensation aligned with International Labour Organisation standards. Terminal operators and stevedoring associations pledged continued cooperation toward improving safety and working conditions for dockworkers across Nigerian ports.
