Over 81% of rural homes get tap water under Jal Jeevan
More than 81 percent of rural households across India received access to clean tap water through the Jal Jeevan Mission, government data showed on Sunday. The program connected over 15.72 crore homes to safe drinking water supplies as of Oct. 22, up from 3.23 crore households when Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the initiative on Aug. 15, 2019.
The central government allocated 2,08,652 crore rupees to states and union territories for the project. Eleven states and union territories achieved complete tap water connectivity for rural residents. Water infrastructure reached 9,23,297 schools and 9,66,876 child care centers nationwide.
Laboratories tested 38.78 lakh water samples across 4,49,961 villages this fiscal year through Oct. 21. The program trained 24.80 lakh women to monitor water quality using field testing equipment in 5.07 lakh villages.
