PTAD marks 10 years reforming Nigeria pensions
Nigeria’s Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate has advanced reforms strengthening the country’s Defined Benefit Scheme through enhanced transparency and accountability measures for federal retirees, according to Executive Secretary Tolulope Odunaiya. The agency has eliminated fraudulent beneficiaries through nationwide biometric verification and a digital confirmation platform, saving substantial government funds while digitizing millions of legacy pension records for improved tracking and complaint resolution.
Odunaiya noted the directorate inherited significant administrative challenges when established under the Pension Reform Act, including fragmented management systems and pension liabilities exceeding N2 trillion. The organization administers retirement benefits for civil service workers, police officers, customs officials, immigration personnel, prison staff, and parastatal employees who retired before transitioning to the Contributory Pension Scheme. Monthly payments are delivered consistently, restoring confidence among retirees across multiple federal agencies.
