Warner Music outlines AI principles for artist protection
Warner Music Group has established mandatory criteria for artificial intelligence collaborations following settlement agreements with Udio and a partnership announcement with Stability AI. Chief executive Robert Kyncl stated that licensing arrangements must provide proper economic compensation while permitting artists to control usage of their identity and vocal characteristics in generated content.
The policy framework arrives as startup Klay reportedly secured licensing from all three major recording companies, while competitor Suno operates without such agreements despite raising substantial venture funding and generating significant revenue. Kyncl compared the current technological shift to streaming adoption, arguing that licensed partnerships will create commercial opportunities rather than threaten the recording industry.
The executive outlined a strategy combining legislative advocacy, legal action against unauthorized platforms, and licensing deals to guide industry development during what he characterized as formative stages of generative audio technology.
