RioZim scandal erupts as secretary quits in protest
Diedre Niehaus has left her position as company secretary at RioZim following claims of a hostile workplace and alleged corporate violations. Reports suggest she faced constructive dismissal after the mining firm allegedly ignored a sexual harassment report and exposed her to authorities investigating possible fraud and money laundering. The South African executive also contended that colleagues systematically blocked her from performing legal, human resources and administrative responsibilities by excluding her from critical discussions and violating her contract terms.
The departure occurred on October 24, roughly 15 months after she joined the resource company. A board member speaking anonymously said directors will conduct an independent review of her accusations while maintaining governance standards. Company spokesperson Wilson Gwatiringa acknowledged her exit but declined to elaborate beyond calling it routine for the business sector. The development adds to existing troubles at RioZim, where some workers have petitioned courts for corporate rescue proceedings. Chief executive Rajgopal Swami recently asked staff to stop creating obstacles to recovery efforts, claiming the firm stands near a financial turnaround despite delayed recapitalization and outstanding employee payments.
