Sony Music snaps up Finland’s Elements
Sony Music Publishing has acquired a significant stake in Elements Music, a Finnish independent music publisher with a catalog of approximately 10,000 songs. Financial details were not revealed. The deal includes a long-term creative partnership that links Elements’ songwriters to Sony’s global network while keeping its local operations intact under SMP Scandinavia.
Founded in 2005, Elements represents Finnish writers such as Axel Ehnström, Johannes Brotherus (KUUMAA), OLGA Jonas Olsson, Timo Kiiskinen, Kyösti Salokorpi, Samuli Sirviö, and BESS. Its catalog also includes music from iconic Finnish bands like Eppu Normaali, Yö, and Popeda.
Elements owners Tommi Tuomainen and Eero Tolppanen said the move strengthens protection for Finnish creators amid rapid changes driven by artificial intelligence and global platforms. They emphasized the need for a partner with the reach and resources to safeguard artists’ interests.
Johnny Tennander, managing director of SMP Scandinavia, praised Elements’ achievements and called the partnership a natural progression. Guy Henderson, president of international at Sony Music Publishing, highlighted the blend of local expertise and global scale to support songwriters in Finland and beyond.
This follows Sony’s recent acquisitions, including Lusafrica and Africa Nostra in July and Hipgnosis Songs Group LLC in June, which added 4,400 copyrights—including works by Shawn Mendes, Panic! At the Disco, and One Direction—to Sony’s catalog.
