South Korea to inspect 1,600 IT systems after breaches
South Korea will examine computer networks at 1,600 organizations after security failures exposed customer records at telecommunications providers. The Science and ICT Ministry announced inspections targeting 288 infrastructure sites, 152 government offices, 261 banks and 949 communications companies. Authorities plan unannounced audits that simulate actual cyberattacks on phone carriers following breaches at SK Telecom, KT Corp and Lotte Card.
Officials will create coordinated protocols among agencies investigating digital intrusions and responding to threats. New regulations permit surprise inspections to prevent firms from hiding network compromises. Penalties increase for delayed incident reports, inadequate prevention measures and repeated information leaks. Publicly traded corporations must disclose cybersecurity expenditures under proposed disclosure requirements.
