Spotify acquires WhoSampled to enhance song credits
Spotify has purchased WhoSampled, a database platform that catalogs musical samples, covers, and remixes across more than 1.2 million tracks. The streaming service disclosed the transaction through a blog entry announcing enhanced credit features, with founder Nadav Poraz joining Spotify as Head of WhoSampled while the application continues operating independently.
The London-based company will integrate its data into a Premium subscriber feature called SongDNA, which maps artistic relationships through shared collaborators and borrowed musical elements. WhoSampled announced that its mobile applications will become free to access without advertisements, while submission approval processes will accelerate significantly.
The acquisition extends a pattern of strategic purchases by Spotify, which previously obtained audiobook distributor Findaway and artificial intelligence voice technology firm Sonantic to diversify its audio content offerings beyond music streaming.
