Suno bets big while lawsuits howl
Artificial intelligence music generator Suno updated its free software tier while pursuing $100 million in financing at a $2 billion company value. The platform released version 4.5 to replace its previous free tool and added features for vocal layering and instrumental backing tracks. The company released its most sophisticated product for subscribers last month alongside a digital audio workstation that enables multitrack editing and stem creation.
Major record labels accused Suno and competitor Udio of training algorithms with protected recordings without authorization or payment to rights holders. Both platforms acknowledged using copyrighted material but argued their practices constitute fair use under American law. The legal disputes have not deterred investment interest as Suno reportedly generates $100 million in annual recurring revenue and faces growing competition from platforms such as Boomy and a planned OpenAI music service.
