Trump raises tariffs on Canada after ad dispute
President Donald Trump announced a 10 percent tariff increase on Canadian imports on Saturday after Ontario aired a commercial featuring former President Ronald Reagan discussing trade policy. The advertisement cited Reagan’s 1987 warnings about the consequences of tariffs, prompting Trump to accuse Canada of misrepresenting the facts and committing a hostile act. He canceled trade discussions two days earlier over the campaign.
Ontario officials said they would remove the commercial on Monday to restart negotiations. The Reagan Foundation criticized the province for using selective content and considered legal action. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney warned that American tariffs have reached levels not seen since the Great Depression and called for major economic policy changes.
Trump plans to attend an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation dinner on Wednesday in South Korea alongside Carney, but ruled out a meeting. The trade dispute intensified as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 11-4 in the World Series opener on Friday.
