Uganda launches first-ever sugar industry council
Uganda launched its first Sugar Industry Stakeholders Council on Friday, with Trade Minister Francis Mwebesa leading the ceremonies. The body operates under the Sugar Amendment Act of 2025 and unites millers, farmers, regulators and officials to coordinate sector development.
The council will oversee licensing procedures, create a master plan for the industry, establish pricing standards between producers and growers, monitor markets, settle disputes and advance technology adoption. The Cabinet requires quarterly ministry reports tracking council activities and policy compliance.
Mwebesa directed members to investigate delayed projects, verify operating permits, and eliminate monopolistic behavior that limits competition. The two-year appointments demand transparent leadership across all stakeholder groups from cultivation through processing.
Officials expect the framework to stabilize operations and distribute economic benefits fairly throughout the sugar value chain. The minister declared the administrative structure a foundation for sustainable growth, serving Uganda’s agricultural and manufacturing priorities.
