Zohran Mamdani could become NYC’s first Muslim mayor
Zohran Mamdani stands poised to become the first Muslim mayor of New York City after winning the Democratic primary in June. The 34-year-old state assembly member from Queens has captured attention through his progressive platform focused on making the city affordable for its 8.5 million residents.
Born in Uganda to Indian parents, Mamdani moved to America at age 7 and became a citizen in 2018. His mother is the acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair, while his father is an Africa scholar. Critics have labeled him a nepo baby because of his family background.
The self-described socialist promises expanded rent control, free childcare and bus service, plus city-operated grocery stores. He supports Palestinian causes and calls Israel an apartheid state, which has drawn criticism from some Jewish residents. He has recently condemned antisemitism.
Mamdani combines traditional door-to-door campaigning with a strong social media presence. Political analysts say he appeals to voters frustrated with city leaders. President Donald Trump dismisses him as a little communist.
