98% of ₹2000 notes returned, RBI’s phase-out a success
India’s central bank reported that nearly all 2,000-rupee banknotes have returned to the financial system more than two years after officials began phasing out the high-denomination currency. The Reserve Bank of India said 98.37 percent of the pink bills had been deposited or exchanged as of Oct. 31, with only 5,817 crore rupees remaining from an initial 3.56 lakh crore rupees when the withdrawal program started on May 19, 2023.
The banknotes retain legal tender status despite the exchange deadline passing on Oct. 7, 2023, at commercial bank branches. Citizens holding the currency can visit any of 19 Reserve Bank facilities nationwide for direct exchanges or account deposits. Alternatively, individuals may mail their bills through India Post to these offices for electronic credit transfers.
Officials view the rapid collection as evidence of successful policy implementation, promoting transaction transparency and electronic payment adoption. The near-complete removal of these notes from daily commerce demonstrates public cooperation with the monetary initiative.
