AI surge fuels global memory chip shortage
Artificial intelligence infrastructure buildout has intensified memory chip shortages, forcing manufacturers of consumer electronics and vehicles to confront severe supply constraints. SMIC co-chief executive Zhao Haijun indicated that companies cannot predict component availability for upcoming production cycles, while Samsung raised prices on certain memory products by 60 percent.
Premium high-bandwidth memory chips command substantial margins as server operators constructing data centers prioritize performance over cost considerations, leaving budget device manufacturers with limited access to standard components. Dan Nystedt from TriOrion noted that demand projections for the following year substantially exceed current levels. Supply tightness already affects entry-level smartphones and set-top boxes, according to Counterpoint Research director M.S. Hwang, with risks extending across additional product categories.
TrendForce analysts expect sustained price increases will compel brands to raise retail costs, affecting smartphones, laptops, and automotive systems dependent on memory components.
