Animal Crossing hops to Switch 2 in 2026
Nintendo announced that Animal Crossing: New Horizons will receive a Nintendo Switch 2 edition featuring graphical enhancements and new functionalities that leverage the upgraded hardware. A free 3.0 title update, available to players on both the original Switch and Switch 2, will launch simultaneously on January 15, 2026. Owners of the original game can upgrade to the Switch 2 version through a paid upgrade pack.
The Switch 2 edition supports mouse-style controls via the Joy-Con 2 and uses the system’s built-in microphone to let players call out to island guests for easier locating. It also expands multiplayer from eight to twelve players visiting a single island. While Nintendo did not detail specific visual improvements, promotional footage shows noticeably sharper image quality compared with the original version.
The 3.0 update introduces new amiibo compatibility, allowing Legend of Zelda and Splatoon figures to summon up to four additional characters. It also features LEGO-themed furniture and items, as well as a new hotel feature where players manage guest rooms to unlock outfits and decor. Since its March 2020 debut, New Horizons has become Nintendo’s second-best-selling Switch title.
