Brazil mourns Lô Borges, Clube da Esquina icon dies
Brazilian musician Lô Borges has died in Belo Horizonte after being treated for an infection linked to medication. Born as Salomão Borges Filho in the same city, he became known for his collaboration with Milton Nascimento on the landmark 1972 double album Clube da Esquina.
As a young person, Borges began making music on the streets with neighborhood children. He studied classical guitar and admired the Beatles. Along with his brother Márcio, he connected with the established artist Nascimento. This group of musicians formed a collective called Clube da Esquina, which translates to Corner Club, and the movement significantly influenced Brazilian music.
The 1972 collaborative album blended rock, jazz, bossa nova, and classical influences. While it propelled Nascimento to worldwide recognition, the project also jump-started Borges’ individual career. He released his first solo record later that same year. After stepping away from performing for several years, he resumed recording in the late 1970s. His final album, Não Me Espere na Estação, came out in 2023. He continued working as a recording artist until recently.
