Broadway musicians threaten strike over contract dispute
Broadway musicians threaten to walk off the job on Thursday if negotiations fail to produce a new labor agreement. The union representing thousands of performers warned Wednesday that mediation talks must yield results by morning or productions will halt immediately. Workers have operated without a contract since August 31 while seeking better health benefits and pay increases.
Major shows face disruption should musicians follow through on the strike threat. Performances of Hamilton, Wicked, The Lion King, and other popular productions would shut down without orchestra members. The Broadway League said Tuesday it remains committed to fair bargaining despite union criticism. Actors reached a separate tentative deal Saturday but may refuse to cross picket lines in support of striking musicians.
