Cambodia cashew boom lifts global supply to 5.5 million tonnes
Cambodia’s expanding cashew production will push worldwide output to 5.5 million metric tonnes in 2025. The Southeast Asian nation joins the Ivory Coast, India, and Vietnam as a leading supplier of the popular nut.
Cambodian farmers harvested 940,000 metric tonnes of raw cashews from January through August and earned $1.4 billion from exports. The country plants the M23 variety across 300,000 hectares because it resists weather damage and disease. Vietnam purchases 95 percent of Cambodian cashews to blend with African nuts.
The global cashew market generates $7 billion annually and may reach $10 billion by 2031. Chinese buyers imported 100,000 metric tonnes from Vietnam in the first seven months of 2025 as urban consumers seek plant-based foods. African farmers supply half the worldwide cashew inventory, and more than 2.5 million people depend on the crop for income.
