US plans to deport Ábrego García to Liberia
The Department of Homeland Security intends to send Kilmar Ábrego García to Liberia by the end of this month despite multiple federal court rulings against his initial wrongful deportation. The Salvadoran man, who lived in Maryland for over 10 years, was mistakenly removed to El Salvador earlier this year, even after courts determined he faced persecution there. The Supreme Court ordered his return, and he came back in June.
Federal officials say they approached Uganda, Eswatini, Ghana and Liberia after Ábrego García became unable to return to El Salvador. His lawyers argue that sending him to an unfamiliar country away from his family violates constitutional protections. A Maryland district judge previously ruled his deportation had no legal basis and shocked the conscience. A federal judge in Tennessee also found a realistic likelihood that human smuggling charges against him stem from vindictive prosecution.
