Creator royalties reach record $15.1B as digital soars in 2024
Royalty payments to creative professionals worldwide achieved unprecedented levels during 2024, reaching €13.97 billion according to international rights organization CISAC. This represented a six-point-six percent annual increase, with digital music revenue crossing the five billion euro threshold for the first time. Songwriters and publishers received ninety percent of these distributions, totaling €12.59 billion.
United States territories led geographic contributions with €3.14 billion collected, showing ten point one percent growth. Central and Eastern European markets expanded seventeen point nine percent annually, though digital adoption remained relatively low. Traditional broadcast royalties increased one point two percent, reversing prior year declines. Industry officials highlighted artificial intelligence challenges, warning that unregulated systems might capture significant future revenue shares without transparent licensing frameworks and proper creator compensation mechanisms. They noted recent agreements between technology firms and rights holders offered potential pathways for balanced development.
